ve received a shoe box filled with gifts from people they've never met, who live hundreds of miles away.
Run by the Samaritan's Purse, the scheme invites people to fill a wrapped shoe box with toys, sweets and educational gifts for a child within an age range of their choice.
Alongside hundreds of other organisations, Chester Student Union are doing their bit and spreading the Christmas cheer. For the past five years university students have been involved in the scheme and donating boxes as individuals, households and friendship groups. Operation Christmas Child was introduced to the student union in 2009 by the Woman's football club and they headed the scheme annually until this year when they teamed up with the swimming club.
Becky Lees, Vice President of Academic Awareness at the University said: “Each year the collection has got bigger and bigger, in 2011 we collected 95 boxes, 2012 151 boxes and this year we sent 219 shoe boxes.”
Boxes from across the world were shipped to less fortunate children in November but there is still opportunities to donate online and even pack a virtual shoe box. The Operation Christmas Child website contains all the details and they will create a personalised shoe box for as little as £12.
