CHESTER-BORN STUART TOMLINSON has traded in his football trainers and goalkeeping gloves for a pair of wrestling boots and colourful spandex.

The former Port Vale goalkeeper announced his contract signing with professional wrestling conglomerate World Wrestling Entertainment on social networking site Twitter last Friday.

Tomlinson, 28, made twenty-five appearances in goal for League Two side Burton Albion last season before retiring due to a knee ligament injury in July.

The move for Tomlinson isn't a wholly surprising one, as due to his muscular build he was frequently referred to as "The Tank" during his goalkeeping days. Tomlinson has also found himself featured on the cover of a recent edition of Men's Health Magazine.

It is believed that WWE officials met with Tomlinson during their European tour last month. The goalkeeper turned professional wrestler will now report to the WWE’s Performance Centre in Orlando, Florida for the next stage in his career.

Friends and supporters of Tomlinson have offered their congratulations to Tomlinson over the weekend on Twitter. You can follow Tomlinson's journey into the world at wrestling on his Twitter account at @stutomo.
