Candle fire safety week

Firefighters across the country are urging people to take care and put out the risk of fire in their homes during Candle Fire Safety Week which runs from 18th to 24th November.

With the days growing darker and Christmas approaching a few candles scattered around the room can lend a warm festive glow to a winter evening, but they can also ruin your Christmas if not used correctly. As can many of the other things we enjoy over the Christmas and New Year period; such as the fairy lights, candles, paper hats and decorations.

Last year in Cheshire there were more accidental domestic fires in December and January than in any other month and with candle fires resulting in around 350 casualties each year, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is asking people to take extra care with candles

Head of Community Safety, Evan Morris, said: “Candles are a typical sight in many homes, scenting our rooms and giving an atmospheric glow to cold winter nights.  But it’s important to remember that a candle is not just a decorative feature.  Left unattended, an open flame scenting your home could leave a trail of devastation.

In support of Fire safety this Christmas we asked the people of Chester if they knew some of the most important steps to keeping you and your loved ones safe.
